Traveling to Madagascar – One girl’s Move Across the World

I’m currently staring at my new 32” suitcase for traveling that arrived yesterday. This has to be the largest suitcase that I’ve owned to date, but I wish it held more.

I’m about to move overseas in the next few weeks and will travel to Madagascar…..and I am finding my imagination running with thoughts of this suitcase turning into a Mary Poppins bag. You know the kind where anything and everything you need is stuffed inside including a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down?

After being married for just a short while now, my husband and I are preparing to move to Madagascar, traveling to an island off of the southeast coast of Africa.

Am I apprehensive? Yes.

Newlyweds…only the beginning of the adventure.

Am I overwhelmed? Often.

Do I know what I will do and how everything will go? No.

Yet despite the uncertainties and continual preparation that leave my life in a whirlwind, I am expectant for what this move holds.

I take comfort in the fact that I have visited the big island twice now and yes in case you’re wondering, the lemurs do sing (ok not really, but I like to pretend).

I know some of the other people we will be working with and I have  actually stayed in the house we will be moving into. There are obstacles that I’ve faced that have prepared me also, like roaches. Yes, the crunchy yucky, freak out and scream upon discovering them–roaches!

I currently live in Tulsa, Oklahoma and never anticipated I would encounter huge roaches here. Yet, this year has had its way of disconnecting me from the current culture I’m in and transitioning me for the adventures that lie ahead.

Here are a few things that I’m learning in my journey traveling to Madagascar:

  1. Learn to expect chaos. If I can be honest with you, moving overseas is a bit of a logistical nightmare and this is coming from an administrative person. I have just learned to set my expectations on unknown variables, plans changing, homesick feelings (yes, even before I’ve left), and my house being in continual disarray with boxes.
  2. It will all get done. The day will come when we will board a plane with passports and visas in hand and we will arrive in Madagascar. Just because everything will get done doesn’t mean it’ll get done to my standards and liking, but it will all get done. My current house will be packed, my items that need to be shipped will sail off, and I’ll carry my make believe Mary Poppins suitcase into my new “demure” as they say in French. Some items may break in the process. Other things might be forgotten on my “to-do list”, but it will all get done.
  3. Focus on the adventures, not the challenges.Yes there are things I am coming up against that are trying, like the language barrier I’m about to experience. The official languages in Madagascar are French and Malagasy. Yes, Malagasy. I can’t even say that five times fast let alone pronounce the rest of their language. However, I will get to learn French, which has been a desire since I was young. Focusing on the adventure aspect helps me endure the challenges.
  4. Starting somewhere that is new can be exciting.I love that I will get to learn new things and have exposure to a different culture. I will travel and explore new places. I get to bring my personality and gifts into my new surroundings and love on the people there.  My household décor will reflect my new surroundings and I’ll be thankful for all that has led me to this place.
