Name: Emily Kammerlohr Hometown: Houston, Texas Major: English & Ancient Studies Favorite cities: Istanbul,Turkey and Bath, United Kingdom Favorite food: Spaghetti

I’ve got a thing for chocolate and mango gelato, swirled together with cream and a cookie on top. Eight weeks out and this treat from Frigidarium is the one thing from Rome that I can’t get off my mind.

Posin’ with the car of my dreams!

I’m Emily – one of the interns for the summer! I like long walks on the beach at sunset and driving Ferraris. Well, at least I think I would like to drive them. I saw quite a few in Monaco, but I didn’t want to fork over the 80 euro to take one out for a test spin; yet as I stood next to a stranger’s in Monte Carlo, I just knew that this car was thone for me.

I studied in Rome, Italy, last semester as a part of my school’s Junior Year Abroad program. I’m majoring in English and Ancient Studies, so actually going to the place where all the history I have been studying occurred was amazing and vital to my path in the completion of my degree!

In addition to all the information about the socioeconomic and political structures of Flavian period you could think of, I also learned that modern Rome is about as organized as the plates of spaghetti for which she is so famous. Yet after spending nearly five months getting lost in her winding streets, she really grew on me and I’m already plotting ways to return.

In my time there, I experienced so many crazy things.  I navigated angry Italian men, train strikes (yes, plural…the Italians love to strike), as well as a Papal Audience during which it nearly hailed. I am convinced  that it was hailing, but I say “nearly” because my traveling companions insisted that rain that is both very cold and very hard is, in fact, not hail.  However, through it all, my love for the Eternal city only grew.

Although I enjoyed having Rome as my home, one of the best parts of studying abroad is  taking advantage of already being “across the pond” and using your weekends to see the  world! As Rome is so conveniently located in the Mediterranean, I was able to travel to the  likes of Morocco and Turkey and stay within my budget. I may have only eaten Cheetos for  dinner two of the nights I was gone – but that’s beside the point.

A dream come true to see in person!

Aside from those two treacherous Cheeto-filled nights, I spent much of my time in each new  city searching for the best place to grab dessert. Need a recommendation for ciambelle,  macaroons, or the sweetest bun in Bath? I’m your girl. Dessert is literally my life, and I’ve got  a knack for finding where to chow down for cheap.

Now that I’m back Stateside, I’m thrilled for this opportunity to share my adventures abroad, set backs and mess ups included, with all of you. The worst moments make the best stories, and I can hardly wait for you to hear them. Ciao for now!
