Stamping at Pigeons – Epiphanies at the Tower of Pisa

Epiphanies strike at the oddest times. My experience in Switzerland had told me to slow down. This one was about to tell me something as well.

I sat in the shade of the church, looking around the corner at the Tower of Pisa. Masses of tourists swarmed around, clicking their cameras in all directions. Every few minutes, someone would raise their hands in the air and make a pushing motion toward the tower while his or her friend snapped away.

I knew in two days that hundreds of clever pictures would show up all over facebook showing people appearing to “hold up” the tower. I was tired of people though, so I just observed from a distance. Me learning to be a better person didn’t include overcoming my crankiness yet. I let my friend wander off among the flocks of people at the cathedrals. I was content to sit in my shadowy corner and watch the bustle of activity.

A small boy ran up beside me. He squealed with delight as he ran back and forth among the pigeons that were shuffling around – stamping his feet to make them scatter and then running after them to stamp again.

He giggled and giggled, and we all turned to watch. I couldn’t help but smile at the sight of it. I must admit, a few weeks before, I would have thought, “Who is this kid anyway and why is he stamping around in front of me? I’m trying to write something deep and meaningful here!” Silly me.

When was the last time that I looked at something that simple and just marveled in it? Geez, when was the last time I even noticed something that simple? I had been rushing from job to job for years to “get to my dream” – but I wondered what I had been missing along the way. When was the last time I stamped at pigeons anyway? Well, I had honked at pedestrians while I was driving – did that count? Probably not.

I kicked my feet out and leaned back against the wall of the cathedral. What was the point if I ran from job to home to job and never giggled along the way? What was the point of paying for walls and roofs if I never brought them to life with laughter?

Life wasn’t something far off and unreachable; life was now, and I might was well start enjoying it. I vowed to find the pigeons in my life and start stamping around. And I hoped that no one would ever quote me on that, because it would sound very odd.

Let’s learn to seek but still be content at what stage and place that we are in. And enjoy it. Really enjoy it.
