How I Hated Nicaragua Until I Loved It

Nicaragua

The beautiful faces of Nicaragua

This past month I had the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua on an outreach trip. The team I was with visited schools, orphanages, hospitals and more. We learned about their life-styles, their economy, and their greatest needs. But the main thing I learned was not what I expected.

When I first got off the plane, I was assaulted by a heat that I was not prepared for. The hour long bus ride to our lodgings was bumpy, hot and dusty. The hostel-like accommodations were clean and welcoming, but upon entering the room I realized that I was about to spend 8 days in 90+ weather without air-conditioning and a shower that barely worked. I braced myself. I was reminded what I tell all our blog followers, “Go with the flow. Be flexible.”

One particularly hot morning, we headed to an orphanage about an hour away. We saw the land where they grew their own food, the trees that they had planted, and the small school rooms they had class in every day. Having travelled many places in the world, the scenery was nothing to shout about, the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch were getting old, and it was pretty much the opposite of a recreational trip. But when the opportunity had arisen to go on this trip, despite knowing this was not going to be a normal trip, I felt like I was supposed to go.

At this particular orphanage I came across three little girls who captured my heart. As I began talking to them through broken Spanish (very broken) and the help of a translator, I realized that they needed to know how special and valuable they were. Every little girl needs to know these things. After we spent some time talking together, I took a picture of the four of us and told them I would put the picture in my office to remember them and pray for them. They started crying and said they would LOVE for me to do that. In that moment, I realized that though the areas I had visited might not have been beautiful in the natural, in truth, that place was abounding in beauty. And though I love to travel and experience beautiful places, no museum, river, skyscraper, or bridge could ever compare to the beauty I saw in the faces of those girls.

Every trip teaches you not only more about the world but more about yourself. Mother Teresa once said, “Leave love wherever you go…” I think that’s an idea to live by- wherever we go, whoever we meet, we should not only take in the beauty around us but leave something beautiful behind. Beauty is more than what we see on a map; it is the people we meet along the way.
