Off the Beaten Path in Ireland (and into a Cow Pasture)

Taking scenic routes on travel adventuresHave you ever been chased by a mad cow through a pasture near a national landmark? No? That’s a shame. And to think it almost didn’t happen. Luckily, we ventured off the beaten path and took the scenic route.

My friends Kristian, Dawn, and I were staying at a hostel in Doolin, Ireland recently.   The hostel manager recommended that we see the Cliffs of Moher, so we asked him for directions. “You must not follow the tourists,” he insisted, ” you must take the scenic route!”

We set off in the direction he pointed, anxious to see the Cliffs of Moher. We found out that the “scenic route” meant hiking through pastures, around “danger” signs, and over fences.

We were exhausted by the end of it. Kristian kept jumping up and down excitedly, and I kept eying the cows warily. We finally reached the Cliffs of Moher and were awestruck by them. We watched as loads of tour buses pulled up and people piled out of them. We looked at each other and thought  I’m so glad we took the scenic route in Ireland. Look at what we would have missed.

I’m still not completely sure that our little hike was legal. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I hear from so many people who have traveled overseas only to see nothing but the three most touristy monuments in the country. But at the touristy places, you only see a monument and…the tourists.

Here are some easy ways to venture off the beaten path:

We made it! The Cliffs of Moher

  1. Ask locals about the fun and quirky places.
  2. Take an entire day just to stroll the back streets of a city.
  3. Rent a car and drive to a tiny village that no fancy tour bus would ever think to go to.
  4. Ask a hostel/hotel owner about their favorite part of the city.

Go find your random unexpected figurative cow in a pasture somewhere. Chances are, those will be the memories that you’ll treasure most of all.

What is your favorite “off the beaten path” moment?
