Why I Wear Girls Compression Shorts on EVERY TRIP (you should too!)

Today’s post written by guest blogger, Katie Paine.

I have traveled all around the world and back, and I’ve discovered something to pack that will change your life…or at least your thighs! I may forget many things because I’m frazzled traveling, but I will never forget my girls compression shorts.

The (Magical?) Story: My Girls Compression Shorts

I discovered compression shorts when I started training for a half-marathon. They saved my thighs from annoying and painful chafing during my runs. I never thought to wear them under a dress or skirt until my first time in Europe a few summers ago.

Girls compression shorts for travel - my must-have travel itemAfter spending hours a day traipsing around Paris, I worked up quite a sweat…and I’m not talking about just in the armpits. I didn’t have anything that I could wear under my dresses to prevent chafing. I had to search for a drugstore and buy baby powder to help in my desperation. Baby powder did help, but it wasn’t a cure-all. After I got home from my trip, I was putting away my laundry when… LIGHTBULB! COMPRESSION SHORTS UNDER A DRESS!!!

If you are only packing jeans, or are traveling to a locale where it is going to be cold, then you probably don’t need to bring a pair of compression shorts. However, if you are going to be doing a lot of walking and/or wearing those oh-so-fabulous dresses, trust me, you want this wonderful invention with you.

Compression shorts also help with blood circulation, too! During lengthy international flights there can be limited mobility, which means that blood clots could be a concern. Chafing is no fun, but a blood clot can have serious consequences.

I bought my first pair of girls compression shorts from Goodwill for $2. I know what you’re thinking, ”Hand-me-down athletic wear…EW,” but I buy everything but undies at thrift stores. However, if you aren’t as thrifty or dare I say, weird, as I am, you can get a pair from any athletic store for less than $15.

compression shorts for girlsI have purchased a few pairs from the little boys’ section at Target. The boys’ shorts are a little longer than some of the girls’ pairs. So if the girls’ department only has pairs that resemble boy short undies, check the boys’ section. I have a little junk in the trunk and average sized waist/hips—they fit perfectly!

I recommend these Under Armour compression shorts. They have a long inseam and don’t ride up.

But…if you are still thinking, “Why do I really need these for travel wear?” I know, it’s not something you want to talk about over brunch with your adorable crush, but everyone sweats. It isn’t pretty, but we do it! When you are wandering around a city full of magical unknowns, the last thing you want to think about is sweaty thighs. Plus, the shorts help with circulation. So pack a pair of compression shorts for girls, and travel in comfort! Also, check out the Travel Chicks Packlist for what other clothing items to bring.

I read your article (which I can identify with personally) and think you have the makings of a newspaper correspondent or commentator, something like that. I was impressed! I also liked the comnment at the end which describes a beautiful, happy, popular girl who has it all together and is having a ball doing what most of us just dream of. Hurray for you!
