The Cost of Our Trip to Europe Adventure – 2014

Low Cost of Europe Adventure

One of the first questions that everyone asks us about our Europe adventures is, “How much do these trips cost anyway?” And it’s a great question. It’s hard to sit in your living room and calculate how much trekking across the great unknown would cost. You want some ballpark idea of how much to save.

That’s why we wanted to post this basic expense overview. Your trip will be a bit different, but this is a good starting place. So when you read through our upcoming blog posts and videos from the trip (which are great and terrible and epic, by the way), this will give you a good idea of what the adventures cost.

Some things to note for our trip to Europe cost and calculations:

  • On this trip, we traveled at a medium comfort and price level. Could we have traveled more cheaply? Yes. We could have stayed in smaller places with poorer locations during the first part of the trip. But we could have spent much more as well. We feel as if this was a good, comfortable, and affordable trip that almost anyone would have enjoyed.
  • This trip was broken up into two parts. Five girls traveled during the first part and two of us traveled during the second part. The lodging and transportation cost-saving strategies we used were very different for traveling with two people versus traveling with a group. (This is why we have lodging options for single travelers, for two travelers, and lodging options for a group – knowing the difference can save you money!)
  • We got super-cheap plane tickets by applying for certain credit cards. One credit card usually equals out to a free round-trip ticket overseas in off-season. It’s worth the effort.  Details on that soon. We also have ways to find cheap plane tickets.
  • These expenses are just the base cost of the trip – they do not include food or entertainment. You can travel very cheaply or very expensively with food, and this will be something to consider.

Cost of Europe Trip 2014 - detailed expenses

*This cost for metro tickets will be more if you stay in large cities. We thought these were included in our railpass. They weren’t. We may have accidentally illegally rode some city buses 🙂

**This amount should have been less. We waited until the very last minute to book. On many trains, it’s much cheaper to reserve ahead, which we will detail in upcoming blogs.

***The railpasses are traditionally more expensive, but we received a discount. Count on paying around $350-$400 for 3-5 days, which is what we usually pay.
